My First MRCP Book
My First MRCP Book has now set thousands of candidates on the right course not just for part 1 of the MRCP examination, but also for part 2 and PACES, utilising fun and easy ways to remember facts that will invariably prove useful whether students are puzzling over a tricky question or confronting the furrowed brow of a formidable PACES examiner. This second edition has been adjusted to reflect the new written examination, which is now a best of five format. While that may initially seem easier than the old format, the reality is that it can still be confusing when all five choices seem to be plausible answers. Knowing some basic facts will help students to tackle this situation with ease. To reflect the changes, three new authors have joined the ranks. Having recently (and eventually!) succeeded in passing the new format of the examination, the newbies have added questions on topics such as atrial fibrillation, tuberculosis, HIV and diabetes that, in their recent experience, reflect the changing emphasis of the examination. In addition, they have included a few images and ECGs, which will test your problem-solving abilities in addition to knowledge of the facts. Most importantly, we hope that this book will give pleasure, as much to the student as to the more qualified reader, and, whoever you are, we hope that you will enjoy your lessons. But remember don t leave your room smiling. Maintain the myth of the tortured youth.

MRCP PACES Masterclass Collection PDF
The second edition of Medical Masterclass is produced and published by the Education Department of the Royal College of Physicians of London. It comprises 12 textbooks, a companion interactive website and two CD-ROMs. Its aim is to help doctors in their first few years of training to improve their medical knowledge and skills; and in particular to (a) learn how to deal with patients who are acutely ill, and (b) pass postgraduate examinations, such as the MRCP(UK) or European Diploma in Internal Medicine.
The 12 textbooks are divided as follows: two cover the scientific background to medicine, one is devoted to general clinical skills [including specific guidance on exam technique for PACES, the practical assessment of clinical examination skills that is the final part of the MRCP(UK) exam], one deals with acute medicine and the other eight cover the range of medical specialties.
The core material of each of the medical specialties is dealt with in seven sections:
• Case histories – you are presented with letters of referral commonly received in each specialty and led through the ways in which the patients’ histories should be explored, and what should then follow in the way of investigation and/or treatment.
• Physical examination scenarios – these emphasise the logical analysis of physical signs and sensible clinical reasoning: ‘having found this, what would you do?’
• Communication and ethical scenarios – what are the difficult issues that commonly arise in each specialty? What do you actually say to the ‘frequently asked (but still very difficult) questions?’
• Acute presentations – what are the priorities if you are the doctor seeing the patient in the Emergency Department or the Medical Admissions Unit?
• Diseases and treatments – structured concise notes.
• Investigations and practical procedures – more short and to-the-point notes.
• Self assessment questions – in the form used in the MRCP(UK) Part 1 and Part 2 exams.
The companion website – which is continually updated – enables you to take mock MRCP(UK) Part 1 or Part 2 exams, or to be selective in the questions you tackle (if you want to do ten questions on cardiology, or any other specialty, you can do). For every question you complete you can see how your score compares with that of others who have logged onto the site and attempted it. The two CD-ROMs each contain 30 interactive cases requiring diagnosis and treatment.

Pathophysiology of Disease: An Introduction to Clinical Medicine
The aim of this book is to provide students with an introduction to clinical medicine through the study of diseases as manifestations of pathophysiology. The authors (all experts in their respective fields) have provided a brief review of the relevant normal structure and function of each system in the body, followed by a description of the underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms that underlie several common diseases related to that system. With this approach comes an explication of the symptoms and signs of each disease state and an essential framework for the student’s later mastery of treatment strategies. Several subject areas that are not restricted to a single body system are also covered (eg, neoplasia and infectious disease), but the same approach is used in these instances as well. For the most part, diagnosis and treatment are not covered here but are left for later, more detailed study and textbooks such as the annually updated Current Medical Diagnosis & Treatment. No attempt is made here to be comprehensive or complete; the pathophysiology section of each chapter discusses one to five relevant clinical entities, based either on their frequency (eg, coronary artery disease and hypertension) or on their importance to understanding how physiologic systems may become disordered (eg, fragile X mental retardation or pheochromocytoma). The aim is to introduce students to diseases as manifestations of disordered function and to start them thinking about the related symptoms and signs in terms
